A saltwater chlorinator for pools, with an electrolytic cell, attaches to your pool circulation system across the pool filter. It works with salt to produce sodium hypochlorite, and is a replacement and improvement of conventional automatic pool chlorinators.
What You Need To Know about Saltwater Chlorinators
Salt chlorination systems makes pool water healthier because, if ingested, sodium hypochlorite is better for your body than chlorine. This is because salt is more natural than chlorine. For this reason they are becoming a more common and popular choice for chlorination systems.
The concentration of salt that is added to the water is 3000 parts per million, meaning that this only needs to be topped up once every couple of months. The size of the pool determines how much salt will be used and how long the chlorinator and filter will need to run every day. Other pool chemicals are sometimes added (in addition to salt) in order to control the pH level of the water.

Cleaning A Salt Chlorinator Cell
There will come a time when your swimming pool salt chlorinator will either tell you to clean the electrolytic cell or it will start giving you inaccurate salt readings. This is because of scale buildup. There are products available that prevent and reduce scale buildup on your cell, thereby extending the time between necessary cleanings. The following is a basic guide to cleaning your chlorinator cell.
- Step 1:Turn off your pool pump and, if you have a cartridge filler, let the air out of the filter. Remove the cell from your chlorinator system and disconnect it from the control box (if you have one).
- Step 2: In a bucket, dilute the muriatic acid in the ratio of 1 part acid to 4 parts water (be careful of the fumes).
- Step 3: Hold your cell vertically over another bucket, and very carefully pour the acid and water mixture through the cell. There should be a foaming effect.
Step 4: Once all the liquid is finished and there is no more foaming, rinse the cell well with water and put it back into your chlorination system. Reattach the control box (if you have one) and turn your pump back on. Check that everything is working properly.
