Kreepy Krauly Cleaners
The name Kreepy Krauly has become so synonymous with automatic pools cleaners over the years that, today, many different brands or pool cleaner are referred to as Kreepy Krauly pool cleaners, regardless of whether or not that is the brand name.
The first automatic pool cleaner was invented in 1951 in South Africa, by hydraulic engineer Ferdinand Chauvier, who realised that with the large number of swimming pools in the country, there was a market for something that would take the hassle out of cleaning pools.
He continued working on his design for many years, until, in 1974, he released the original, classic Kreepy Krauly automatic pool cleaner, a suction side-driven device for “vacuuming” swimming pools, efficiently driven by the suction action of the pool pump. The first Kreepy Krauly model was made of wood and rubber tubing that was melted together on a kitchen stove.
The Kreepy Krauly System
There are several different types of pool cleaners. Electronic pool cleaners use motors to drive the cleaning unit, for example, with the drawback that it requires an additional power cable in order to run the motor.
Kreepy Krauly automatic pool cleaners on the other hand, works by the use of a suction side drive, in which the water being sucked out of the pool by the filter is used to provide both locomotion, and to remove debris from the pool.
The Kreepy Krauly pool cleaner is attached to a vacuum plate in the pool skimmer by a hose, and the suction of the pool pump is used to create pressure which moves the cleaner on the rubber “foot” (which forms a seal against the pool floor), in an economical and efficient means of locomotion which, at the same time, sucks up any foreign matter from the pool, to be caught in a filter basket.
Different Kreepy Krauly Models
After more than 30 years, Kreepy Krauly has become a universal name in the inground pool cleaning business, and offers a number of different models and products, including the Sweepy, and the Kreepy Krauly Hug Bug, designed for smaller scale needs like splash pools.
Attachments and accessories, such as the Kreepy Krauly Thruster, (which prevents the cleaner from being trapped in oddly shaped pools), are also available, and most pool equipment stores will supply genuine spare Kreepy Krauly parts.
